The College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) at Northern
Illinois University (NIU) is seeking a director of marketing and
communications. The anticipated start date for this proposed
position is January 1, 2017. Northern Illinois University Northern Illinois University is a comprehensive teaching and

of three schools, each with award-winning educational programs,
exciting performances and exhibits, and outstanding art studios,
theatres, practice spaces and concert halls. Students have the
opportunity to explore their creativity while receiving support and
guidance from our world-renowned faculty. In addition, CVPA hosts
the Community School of the Arts and the Art Museum, with serves a

more information, visit http://vpa.niu.edu Description of the Position The director will report to the Dean of the CVPA and work
closely with the Universitys Division of Marketing and
Communication on an integrated marketing and communications effort.
The director will: develop and advance a College communications
strategy; lead the College's public relations, social media, and
marketing activities; and direct all aspects of creating,
producing, and distributing print and or electronic materials to
the broad set of constituents and partners, internal and external.
Working with the Dean and the School Directors, the director may
also serve as the liaison between the CVPA and key university
units. REQUIRED SKILLS Successful candidates must have: At least five years of experience in the field of
communications, journalism, marketing or public relations. Direct experience working in the visual and/or performing
arts. Understanding of the unique nature of the arts on the university
campus. Ability to listen to, and utilize expertise of, faculty in the
College. Excellent writing, editing and verbal skills, and the use of the
web, social media and emerging technologies. Ability to identify communication goals in the framework of
overall marketing and public relations goals and develop clear,
focused communications strategy to meet those goals. Superior customer service skills. Excellent interpersonal skills, enthusiasm and willingness to
"go the extra mile." Ability to meet deadlines and be accommodating to "urgent"
projects. Ability to perform well under pressure and have the ability to
juggle multiple tasks simultaneously. Ability to build and maintain business relationships through
excellent diplomacy, negotiation, and trust. A Bachelors degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or
Visual or Performing Arts field required. PREFERRED SKILLS Strongest consideration will be given to candidates with: Marketing and communications experience in a university, other
educational organization, or in a similar not-for-profit setting
