People's Action Institute and sister organization People's Action are national progressive organizations supporting the mobilization and leadership of the grassroots in support of an agenda that puts people before profits. People's Action/Institute builds the power of poor and working people, in rural, suburban, and urban areas to win change through issue campaigns and elections. With offices in Washington, D.C. and Chicago, IL and remote staff across the country, we support and advance state-based and national fights for a People's Green New Deal, Medicare for All, A Homes Guarantee, Free College for All and more. Our member organizations, 40 organizations across 30 states improve lives by running state and local level issue and electoral campaigns, leading statewide tables, and taking collective action to change national policy and politics. Our member organizations have won important victories at the national, state, and local levels, including health insurance for millions and the reversal of health care laws that discriminate based on citizenship, stopping Wall Street banks from selling predatory payday loans to their customers, and historic legislation like the Community Reinvestment Act and the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.-- We take our members to the front doors and boardrooms of the worst actors in American life; from racist politicians to bank CEO's.-- We work to defeat the "business as usual" politics endemic to all parts of our political system. We elevate people-power over concentrated wealth, replace milquetoast talking points with bold solutions to radically transform and democratize our economy and government, putting the fight for racial justice at the center of the public conversation. The Opportunity The Movement Politics Director will lead the most innovative and powerful electoral organizing in the country.--They will drive the organization forward with passion and focus to--build the power of our people and our ideas to win real reforms that advance our--Long-Term Agenda --for a People's Economy and Democracy. Our sister organization, People's Action, ran the largest deep canvass program in the history of American politics in 2020, activating 23,000 volunteers to send 38 million texts, make 9.4 million phone calls, and have 280,202 deep canvass phone conversations in battleground states. Our program was shown to be 102 times more effective than typical voter persuasion efforts and had a 48% movement rate for completed conversations, more than accounting for the Democratic margin of victory in several battleground states.-- Progressive leaders including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Reps. Pramila Jayapal, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez participated in our phone and text banking events. Our efforts were covered by--Rolling Stone,--The Atlantic,--The Washington Post,--The Hill, and MSNBC. This cycle, we endorsed and supported 70+ down-ballot candidates nationwide who committed to governing alongside our movement once in office. Over the last five years we've elected over 350 of our member leaders to public office.-- Overview of the Position The Movement Politics Director the organization's work to build the power of everyday people to govern at the local, state, and national level to advance bold ideas and win real reforms. You will lead People's Actions' Movement Politics work into new spheres of power, build a more integrated and impactful programs to elect our candidates at every level of government while expanding the capacity of our member organizations and putting our issues in the center of the debate.-- Specifically, the Movement Politics Director will-----

  • Look to the long term. Make No Small Plans. Own the project of developing a strategic plan for Movement Politics at People's Action so that we are building beyond the next election to the next decade.
  • Drive, drive, drive. Raise People's Actions national profile through earned media and social media in conjunction with our communications department--
  • Develop and execute fundraising plans rooted in our values that expand the resources of People's Action national and our member organizations--
  • Lead People's Actions throw-downs with key electoral allies and political coalitions.--
  • Discard endless meetings and replace them with strategy and action.--
  • Manage effectively; from People's Action national movement politics staff to member committees; take input, enable and support, build systems of joint accountability.--
  • Develop and lead People's Actions engagement with federal candidates--
  • Develop and lead Movement Politics cohort convenings to increase skills and develop joint plans for running slates of candidates locally, in states, and federally.
  • Take some of the most innovative electoral organizing in the country, united with our national volunteer program, and build it into a unified political force capable of building a true multi-racial democracy.--
  • Support the development and execution of a strategy to take over local, state, and federal government with candidates from people's organizations.--
  • Engage the organization in the day to day struggles to back up elected officials doing the right thing and challenge those who are not.--
  • Support our movement organizations to recruit, train, and advance hundreds of candidates who come directly out of our member organizations to run and govern as a collective slate.
  • Build relationships with national media outlets to increase coverage of People's Actions work
  • Bottom line People's Action compliance and PAC operations/finance-- Qualified candidates will have:
    • Demonstrated commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice and their intersections, both inside and outside the organization.
    • Ability to interact at a high level with national media and social media
    • Proven ability to win elections and build scaled electoral programs
    • Experience developing and executing political program, including, data, field, canvass, candidate messaging and communications--
    • A minimum of 5 years direct experience leading political program
    • Experience bottom lining responsibility for large budgets and direct institutional and major donor fundraising--
    • Experience building and driving coalitions of organizations or campaigns, and/or elected officials, and community members.--
    • Understanding of and experience relating to governance structures, and running people centered democratic decision making processes
    • Understanding of campaign finance legal structures--
    • Understanding of and ability to manage a scaled volunteer field structure Additional skills that would be beneficial--
      • Ability to speak a language other than English Compensation and Benefits: Salary Range:--$95,000-$105,000 Location:--Chicago, IL or Washington, D.C. preferred. Remote locations within the United States will be considered.-- Reports to:--the Deputy Director of People's Action.-- Benefits include:--Health Insurance, Dental Insurance, Vision Insurance, Medical and Dependent Care Flex Spending Account, 401(k) plan, Long-Term Disability Insurance, Life Insurance, 11 paid holidays plus the last two weeks of the year that include Christmas Eve/Christmas Day as well as, New Year's Eve/New Year's Day, and you accrue two weeks of vacation your first year of employment.
