Special Education, through the UIC Bridge to the Faculty Scholars
Program, seeks to hire an exceptional post-doctoral scholar whose
work focuses on Mathematics and/or Science instruction for students
with disabilities in inclusive settings. We are interested in a
scholar whose research examines how to transform the general
education curriculum so that all students experience meaningful
participation. The ideal candidate's research will also foreground
culturally sustaining math/science instruction for students with
disabilities. The individual will contribute to a growing research
signature within the department focused on urban special education.
The department is committed to research and teaching that promotes
the improvement of access to quality educational experiences and
increasing academic outcomes for children and youth with
disabilities and particularly those from Black, Latinx, and
Indigenous backgrounds. The Bridge to the Faculty Scholars Program
is a University-level initiative that seeks to advance diversity on
the permanent faculty level by encouraging the recruitment,
retention, and promotion of outstanding scholars from different
backgrounds. This particular position has an emphasis on attracting
individuals from groups who have been historically
under-represented in special education and in mathematics and
science. The position is a two-year post-doctoral fellowship within
the Department of Special Education. Successful postdocs in the
Bridge to the Faculty program, with department approval, will have
the opportunity to transition to Tenure-Track Assistant Professor
position at UIC starting in the 2023-2024 academic year. Selected
scholars will be a part of the second cohort of 20 Bridge to the
Faculty Scholars. In addition to mentorship within the Department
of Special Education, fellows will participate in a cohort-based
mentoring experience through the Office of the Vice Provost for
Diversity. Duties: The primary expectation for the post-doctoral
scholars will be to begin a program of research. This includes: (a)
prepare and submit manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed
journals, beginning with research coming from their dissertation or
other recent scholarly work, (b) present their research at national
and local conferences in order to network and get writing and
research vetted and ready for next steps, (c) identify and seek
internal funding and collaborate with colleagues on extramural
grant proposals to support their research. (d) teach two classess
during the fellowship (2 years) in their topic of specialty. The
post-doctoral scholar will have access to institutional and
departmental initiatives specifically designed to support the
development of a successful assistant professor. This unique
post-doctoral opportunity provides a structured opportunity to be
mentored while building a successful teaching portfolio and a
program of research with access to individualized supports for
academic productivity. Qualifications: An earned Ph.D. in Special
Education or related field by August 14, 2021. Preference will be
given to candidates with expertise/background in culturally
responsive/sustaining pedagogies. Highly qualified candidates will
have a record of (or demonstrated potential for) academic
publication, experience working on grant-funded projects and a
commitment to obtaining external funding for research, and some
experience (or demonstrated potential for) teaching at university
