National Louis University ( NLU ), founded in 1886, is a private, non-profit university based in Chicago, IL serving nearly 10,000 students across five colleges. Recently, the University launched Accelerate U, a new division at the university offering rapid pathways to high-demand skills, post-secondary degrees, and an upwardly-mobile job and career. The Accelerate U team works with employers and non-profit operators to build affordable academic and training pathways that 1) lead to an industry-recognized credential/certificate, 2) bridge to an in-demand, upwardly-mobile job, 3) include coaching and wraparound supports, and 4) grant participants college credit that can build to a bachelor's degree.

Our first training credential - a Medical Assistant Certification - launches in Summer 2021. This is a new model, a new approach to preparing medical assistants for upwardly-mobile, meaningful healthcare jobs and careers. Learners will complete 16 weeks of training followed by a 4-6 week in-person externship at a local healthcare provider. Learners will earn a Registered Medical Assistant ( RMA ) credential along with 30 college credits that can be applied towards a bachelor's degree. Program participants will work with their instructors and a coach throughout the experience and will interview with Accelerate U's healthcare employer partners for a full-time job immediately following program completion. Accelerate U plans to add additional training tracks and fields in 2022.

The Role
The Founding Director of Learning & Product will oversee the design, development, and launch of new "stackable" training experiences that lead to great jobs. They will be one of the first hires on an entrepreneurial team building the future of higher education and workforce development - a new model focused on learner outcomes (full-time jobs!), creating multiple options for program completers ("stackability"), and access and affordability.

The Director will turn an aspirational vision into a rich but efficient learning journey by working collaboratively and often with multiple stakeholders to ensure all degree and certification curricula are high-quality, relevant, flexible, and, most importantly, lead to learner employment and success. The Founding Director of Learning & Product has experience in learning design and product and project management. They understand how to oversee and drive design processes, how to integrate different kinds of content into a cohesive learning journey.

The Director is familiar with the knowledge, skills, and attributes learners need to be competitive in the workplace and is well-versed in learning theory and design. And they can wear all kinds of hats: improve design curricula if necessary, but also work with employer partners to build new training content, manage a team, dig into performance data, and make changes to the programs (quickly) based on learner and faculty feedback.

The Founding Director of Learning & Product will report to the Vice President of Workforce Pathways. Outcomes: As the Founding Director of Learning & Product, your Essential Responsibilities will be to:

  • Lead the design process of all workforce credential pathways, working closely and often with employer hiring partners to understand hiring needs and create corresponding 3-6 month long learning experiences aligned to those needs.
  • Manage content specialists and subject matter experts to improve, revise, and ensure the relevance of all pathway curriculum and learning content.
  • Take complex ideas and design learning content and experiences that are credible, engaging, relevant and accessible.
  • Work closely with NLU curriculum and program specialists to build the university's "stackable" pathways for learners by connecting Accelerate U trainings to existing and new Associate's and Bachelor's Degree programs.
  • Engage with Accelerate U learners to understand deeply their needs and design programs that will ensure their long-term success.
  • Build professional development content for new faculty, coaches, mentors, and volunteers to ensure high-quality delivery of instruction and training.
  • Work closely with instructors to develop innovative instructional models and ensure they implement the curriculum with fidelity; collect feedback from and provide feedback to instructors as they deliver the training.
  • Conduct market research on and prioritize in-demand credentials and certifications for future programs.
  • Identify and assess new learning tools, platforms, and other resources that Accelerate U could incorporate into its programming to improve the learner experience and scale the division's impact.
  • Identify and evaluate learning design partners/vendors and manage ongoing engagement projects.
  • Serve as a project manager for all new pathway design, keeping the team on track and partners informed.
  • Build systems for continual learning, including program evaluation, performance assessments and data, and a learning agenda designed to capture key insights for future program improvement.
  • Help build a new model and approach in higher education for workforce readiness and training. Your Competencies: This is the right role for you if:

    You are committed to equity, access, and building economic mobility.
    You understand that economic disparity and income inequality are destabilizing forces for a true democracy. You know the power of a great education - one that catapults a learner into new, choice-filled opportunities. You also know that too many talented, high-potential people get left out, overlooked, or skipped over when it comes to opportunities. You want to break down those barriers, destroy those misconceptions, and prepare and connect extraordinarily talented people with the opportunities they deserve.

    You are experienced product/program developer and manager.
    You know what high-quality programming and execution look like, and you know how to lead others to get there. You can build something new - often, and especially, when there is no well-worn path ahead and when time is limited. You can communicate effectively with anyone, sharing goals/roadmaps and collecting feedback and data from a variety of stakeholders. You can help design and deliver new, highly relevant curricula that sets all learners up for long-term success in their careers. You can take a complicated process, prioritize what is most important, build a plan for getting everything done, and then manage others to get there.

    You are driven to succeed.
    You are passionate about serving all Accelerate U participants including first-generation learners and others motivated by the challenge of preparing for meaningful work. You want to take everything you know about program, learning, and product design and use it to build a new model at Accelerate U. You're agile, flexible, and engaging, ready to learn quickly to launch the very best program possible at NLU . As a founding member of the team, you believe in and are excited to contribute to a supportive environment and learner-driven culture. You're ready to work hard, determined to build something special for everyone who enrolls.

    You are creative. And relentless.
    You understand the urgency of the moment and the responsibility to create fantastic learning opportunities for learners. You are laser-focused on building effective career-preparation programming, especially when that means finding new and better ways to meet each participant's learning needs. You love to learn yourself by testing new approaches all in an effort to refine and improve program efficacy. You embrace the "and" and work with those around you to build exceptional user experiences. You never, ever give up.

    What you bring to the team.
    First and foremost, the Founding Director of Learning & Product must share Accelerate U's sense of urgency about the need (and opportunity) to build affordable, flexible, rigorous, supportive, career-aligned learning opportunities that set learners up to be engaged citizens in the 21st Century.

    Additionally, candidates for the position must have the following:
    • 5+ years of instructional product or project management experience, ideally developing a learning tool, curricula or program from start to finish;
    • 3+ years of experience managing others;
    • BA required, MA preferred in Product Design/Development, Instructional or Curriculum Design, or related field);
    • Expertise in applying learning theory and design principles to instructional/curricular development;
    • Knowledge and application of best practices using technology for teaching and learning, including but not limited to, multimedia development, learning management systems, adaptive technology, learning analytics, web conferencing tools, etc.;
    • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to articulate a clear vision for new content design;
    • Strong time management and critical thinking skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines effectively;
    • Ability to perform well under pressure while maintaining a positive attitude and building effective client relationships;
    • A positive attitude and relentless focus on providing an excellent experience for all learners;
    • Demonstrated commitment to the potential and importance of meaningful work-based learning;
    • Entrepreneurial, positive problem-solver with the ability to see opportunity in challenges;
    • Clear judgment, a mature interpersonal style, and the ability to drive collaborative decision-making processes;
    • A pragmatic, open-minded approach to new ideas; and
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
