Senior Director Faculty Research Activities (Job ID #138952) Department: Liberal Arts and Sciences Category: Academic Professional Location: Chicago Close Date: 12/18/2020 Description: This position directs, supports and assists in all aspects of LAS faculty research activities. Emphasis is on external major grant funding for faculty research within the College of LAS. The position works with faculty throughout the College to identify grant opportunities and develop successful major grant applications including the coordination of large multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary research proposals. The position is responsible for developing a grant training program for faculty. The position works to improve post-grant support to faculty, especially via its supervision of the Office of Social Science Research. The position requires an understanding of university policies and procedures along with federal, state, private and other regulations required for grant submission and management.
-- Duties: The position will assist faculty in identifying grant opportunities and in developing successful major grant applications in the natural sciences, social sciences, mathematics, humanities, and related fields. Will be responsible for grant writing and working with faculty to develop grant proposals for maximum budgetary and scholarly impact. Will review and edit draft proposals by faculty and staff for accuracy, completeness, stylistic consistency, logic, policy, and budget. Will develop an understanding of university policies and procedures along with federal, state, private and other regulations required for grant submission and management. Will assist in the development and coordination of large multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary research proposals, including obtaining and interpreting guidelines, initiating meetings, collecting participant information, establishing timelines, and advancing narratives. Will develop workshop, group, and individual training for faculty to increase their success rate in obtaining major grants. Will work with other LAS staff and central campus units that oversee and manage external grants. Will supervise the Director of the Office of Social Science Research in their support of grant activity in the social sciences and humanities. Will oversee annual faculty activity reporting, including preparing summary reports of research and grant activity. Will perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned. • Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences, Business Administration, Social Sciences, Humanities or other related field. Related Master's degree or PhD is preferred.
• A minimum of five (5) years combined work experience in research which can be laboratory management and/or bench science experience along with developing and writing research grant proposals for submission in an academic or public institution of higher learning to major sponsors.
• Project management experience with preference to institutions of higher learning and/or research.
• Experience with successfully developing and writing large, multi-disciplinary scientific grants in a higher education environment, along with knowledge of disciplinary standards of excellence at a research institution.
• Excellent communication, presentation, organization, analytical and computer skills, along with proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publishing---.), video conferencing, and other related software.
• Ability to learn all appropriate university-provided information technologies appropriate for position, including those used for grant submission, tracking, and reporting as well as faculty reporting.
