We set them. Job Summary This is a home based or hybrid opportunity. The ability to work from Allstate's Northbrook and/or Chicago offices will be considered, but is not required.
The senior manager, crisis and issue communications is accountable for building and reinforcing Allstate's rigorous crisis and issues management system and managing all corporate crisis and issues communications. This role reports to Allstate's director of reputation management and requires prior experience focused on crisis and issues communications within a corporate, government, NGO or agency setting.-- Key Responsibilities Prepare and Prevent: Identify and anticipate reputation risks, prepare to minimize their likelihood and impact, and/or identify and implement preventative solutions.--

  • Reputation Threat Assessments: Partner with business and stakeholder leaders to identify reputation threats based on likelihood of occurrence and impact to our brand. Assess and provide strategic counsel on reputation implications stemming from business decisions, campaigns and partnerships.
  • Threat Prevention: Identify and implement strategies and policies to reduce the likelihood of reputation threats before they can occur, limit their impact if/when they do or prevent them from happening entirely.--
  • Reputation Monitoring and Measurement: Partner with experts across the enterprise to actively build and enhance monitoring and measurement infrastructure related to news and social media, call center activity, employee and agent communications, etc. to detect potential issues early and evaluate their impact so we can act quickly to mitigate them.
  • Crisis Communications Planning and Brand Protection Infrastructure: Lead the continued evolution and enhancement of crisis communications plans and scenario playbooks to prepare rapid and effective responses to a range of reputation issues. Actively identify and implement approaches to create and/or improve crisis management infrastructure across the enterprise.-- Respond: Respond rapidly and effectively to reputation issues to protect the brand.
    • Crisis Management Team Leadership: Serve as immediate back-up to the director of reputation management on the Enterprise Crisis Management Team and support Allstate's broader crisis response, with a proven track record in effectively managing crisis communications for other organizations.
    • Strategy: Lead the development of communications strategies to protect Allstate's brand and reputation.--
    • Messaging and Materials: Lead the development of foundational communications messages and materials, which inform all other communications such as media statements, social media posts, internal communications, etc. to communicate with key stakeholders during issues or crises. Responsible for strengthening the collective strategic writing skills of Corporate Relations and the Reputation Management Team.
    • Media Correspondence: Liaise with reporters from top-tier national news outlets to ensure accurate news coverage and shape the public narrative.
    • Expert Counsel: Provide strong, confident counsel across the enterprise, particularly to senior executives, to inform decision-making and direct strategy.-- Supervisory Responsibilities:

      • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in communication, journalism or government relations.--
      • 8+ years of experience in strategic communications and 3+ years of experience focused entirely on crisis and issues communications, either in an agency or in-house setting.-- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

          • Critical thinking and change agility: Demonstrates analytical decision-making, including problem solving, with the ability to identify root causes and key obstacles behind issues or needs, anticipate stakeholder reactions and offer high-value communication solutions. Effectively lead through change, demonstrating flexibility and confidence amid ambiguity.--
          • Cross-functional knowledge and collaboration: Knowledge of social media, information security, human resources, investor relations, etc. and collaborative nature to ensure effective partnerships across the enterprise.--
          • Strategic communications: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to understand what makes people tick and how to write and communicate to influence perceptions and motivate actions.--
