About the Department
-When the University of Chicago was founded in 1891, one of the first departments established was the Department of Chemistry. Our current faculty has considerable strength in inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, as well as in interdisciplinary research that delves into biology, physics, and materials science. As of 2015, approximately 175-200 graduate students and 60 postdoctoral research associates were in residence, along with a faculty team of 34. Research groups range in size from 5 to 25 people, allowing for close personal interaction between staff, students, postdocs, and faculty.
Job Summary
-The Assistant Laboratory Director position will directly support our general organic and other laboratory offerings for our undergraduate teaching mission and strategic initiatives.Responsibilities

  • Designs, constructs, and maintains labs each quarter, including preparing lab manuals, developing new labs, and revising existing labs.
  • In collaboration with faculty instructors, develops and supports lecture demonstrations.
  • Defines resources and operational objectives for the teaching laboratories and lecture demonstration facilities.
  • Trains and manages graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants to support lab courses in the undergraduate programs, including scheduling lab sections and training.
  • Trains graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants in lab safety protocols.
  • Develops lab curriculum for general and organic chemistry.
  • Oversees lab sections and prepares and compiles lab materials.
  • Assists the general chemistry and organic chemistry lab directors in executing the lab components of the undergraduate courses.
  • Teaches up to one course per year, either during the typical academic year or over the summer, on an as-needed basis.
  • Assists with the pedagogical development within the Chemistry department.
  • Provides administrative support for general and organic chemistry courses.
  • Prepares and tests lecture demonstrations to ensure consistency with course content. Works with faculty or staff to determine the suitability of demonstrations for specific lectures. Informs faculty of new demonstration developments and materials.
  • Acts as a resource for and instructs faculty on the proper usage of technical scientific apparatus. Uses best practices and laboratory knowledge to promote safety in handling hazardous equipment and materials.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
    Minimum Qualifications
    -Education:Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.---
    Work Experience:Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.---
    Certifications:---Preferred QualificationsEducation:
    • Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field.Experience:
      • Conduct laboratory classes.
      • Oversee a laboratory class, including curriculum design and execution.
      • General and Organic Chemistry laboratory techniques and safety.
      • Teaching lecture components.
      • Teaching experience.Preferred Competencies
