Purpose and Scope:
The Associate Director, Medical Information (MI) is responsible for developing global MI content strategy and delivering omnichannel MI content for assigned Astellas therapeutic areas (TA) and/or products (from early discovery, development, pre-, peri- and post-launch), globally. The Associate Director works closely with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure that the integrated Medical Information Strategic Plan and tactics are aligned with regional and local content needs, Medical Communications Strategic Plan, Integrated Global Brand Plans (iGBPs), Medical Product Strategy (MPS) and Core Medical Plans (CMPs), and meet the needs/preferences of the scientific and medical community to improve patient care.
This role ensures that global Medical Information is developed consistent with policies and processes, which reflect current practices according to industry and regulatory standards, and brings thought leadership, subject matter expertise and industry insights to deliver value through patient focus, effectiveness, efficiency, consistency, and quality of medical information content and by delivery of information through innovative options.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership



  • Responsible for strategic thinking and problem solving, with the ability to both recognize and anticipate problems


  • Contribute to solutions for an improved and successful global medical information community. Help remove barriers that interfere with effective teamwork and collaboration


  • Lead functional and cross-functional teams to achieve alignment through an engaged and collaborative approach to enable execution of MI tactics


  • Champions change by identifying new and innovative solutions to MI service gaps and stakeholder needs


  • Influences across functions, up to senior leadership, to ensure the development of global medical content and its appropriate use across all TAs


    Medical Information Content Leadership and Expertise


    • Responsible for the leadership, strategic direction and the timely development, update/maintenance, and delivery of accurate, balanced, high quality, omnichannel MI content for assigned Astellas TA/products, ensuring alignment with the needs of the regions and countries


    • Responsible for evaluation of and research for complex escalated inquiries for assigned products


    • Collaborates with Scientific Communications, Scientific Publications, Medical Education and Ethics and Compliance to ensure MI content is consistent with global content development for Medical Affairs


    • Proactively identify the need for and champion process improvements for content generation and functional alignment within and across TAs; Collaborate with Medical Information Excellence and Medical Affairs Operations to create/modify/improve current practices as identified in partnership with the Executive Director, Medical Information.


    • Manages translation/medical writing vendor(s) to ensure delivery of compliant, high quality Medical Information content according to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and good medical information practices


    • Stays current on the latest industry trends across all responsibilities to ensure Astellas standards are in line with best practices


    • Utilizes customer MI insights to inform future MI content strategy and creation, where appropriate


      Omni-channel Capabilities


      • Contributes to building MI capabilities to orchestrate omni-channel interactions aimed at addressing the informational needs of our customers (e.g., HCPs, patients).


      • Contributes to expanding digital capabilities and drive innovative communication methods that improve customer experience and ensure MI communication is timely, relevant, and delivered in preferred formats/channels


      • Ensures that MI deliverables align with industry standards and is an industry leader in communication delivery


        Matrix Leadership


        • Establishes strong partnership with Medical and Development leadership and teams at Global, Region and Country levels to support development of MI content


        • Leads and influences across applicable regional MI matrix team(s) to ensure appropriate regional and local input is effectively incorporated into a product's content strategy and MI content


        • Effective collaboration with cross-functional colleagues including Medical Communications Excellence, Scientific Publications, MA Operational Excellence, Scientific Content, and Insights, Commercial, Regulatory, Pharmacovigilance, Corporate Library


        • Provide strategic and scientific input on applicable global matrix teams (e.g., CMTs)


          Medical Governance


          • Demonstrates expertise of all relevant Astellas and alliance and/or vendor (if applicable) SOPs


          • Proactively identify the need for and champion process improvements related to MA governance; Collaborate with Medical Information Excellence and Medical Affairs Operations to create/modify/improve current practices as identified in partnership with the Executive Director, Medical Information


          • Maintains high quality standards for MA and ensures compliance and transparency within all relevant processes and procedures


          • Accountable for meeting budget objectives, assisting in project goals and department priorities.


            Quantitative Dimensions:


            • This position provides global medical information support through the development of MI content for use to respond to MI inquiries (100K+/year) and through addressing escalations of complex/challenging queries for assigned products (up to 25% of total queries)


            • Responsibility includes creating strategy and content for 1-3 priority products as well as assigned regional/local products (up to 400 new documents per year, and maintenance of up to 300-500 documents per year)


            • Lead of 1-3 matrix teams


            • Management of output of 1-2 vendors


            • Position directly impacts compliance with regulatory/safety/legal requirements and internal Astellas policies as they pertain to the dissemination of medical information


              Organizational Context:


              • Reports to the Executive Director of Medical Information, is a core member of the Integrated Medical Communications Product Team and responsible for leading MI content strategy matrix teams for up to four geographies


              • Member of the Core Medical Team, as applicable


              • Collaborates with groups inside Astellas (MA Global, MA in regions and affiliates, Development, Legal, Compliance, etc.) and outside Astellas (external vendors) to ensure MI content addresses stakeholders' needs is developed and disseminated appropriately


              • The Associate Director works on 1-3 priority products, and additional regional/local products depending on product life cycle/complexity and/or leads specific MI initiatives


                Qualifications
                Required


                • Pharm D, Pharmacist, or equivalent Advanced Scientific Degree (such as Nurse with Master's degree, PhD, or MD) with at least 5 years Pharmaceutical Industry experience including drug/medical information experience. (Life Sciences graduate in special cases)


                • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of legal/regulatory/compliance/pharmaceutical requirements and guidelines with respect to medical affairs and medical information in the pharmaceutical industry


                • High degree of scientific competency, business acumen, negotiation skills and the ability to work both independently and within cross-functional teams


                • Excellent written (including reviewing and editing) and verbal communication skills, relationship building capabilities, and proven ability to influence decision-making without authority


                • Knowledge of all aspects of Medical Information responsibilities and ability to bring industry insights on trends


                • Familiarity with industry-leading digital landscape and technology to contribute to sustainable improvements in performance and omni-channel delivery innovation


                • Applies advanced technical skills to review/understand complex scientific/pharmaceutical and medical data from clinical and non-clinical trials and summarizes content in both written and verbal forms according to medical/pharmaceutical criteria


                • Has excellent presentation skills


                • Ability to manage and appropriately prioritize multiple projects with a high level of efficiency


                • Fluent in written and verbal business English


                  Preferred


                  • Experience working in a global pharmaceutical industry environment.


                  • Matrix management experience preferred.


                  • Experience within Therapeutic Area
