Job SummaryThe Manager, Mechanical Engineering - Locomotive works with internal and external partners to define CN's locomotive roadmap, develop locomotive of the future strategy, and working on decarbonization initiatives. The role's primary goal is to work with external suppliers, OEM's, vendors, develop and implement technical solutions.Main ResponsibilitiesLocomotive Roadmap and Specification--- Contribute to and maintain CN's locomotive roadmap with a key focus on safety, productivity, reliability and availability--- Work with Transportation and Safety leadership to understand the requirements of crews and our customers and identify required changes to the locomotive fleet to drive targeted improvements--- Participate in the development of detailed specifications for all locomotive and component purchases--- Envision and lead proofs of concept for new locomotive components with accurate baselines and detailed test plans leading to thorough recommendations to senior leadership--- Work with CN's Financial Planning department on cost and benefit analyses as well as business cases to measure the financial impact of recommended locomotive modifications to CNContinuous Improvement through Vendor and Industry Focus--- Work closely with the Mechanical Reliability team and Fleet Leaders to understand the current pain points affecting CN's locomotive fleet--- Maintain involvement in day-to-day activities, including tracking the reliability and support processes of related components with the goal of identifying areas of improvement--- Participate in discussions with locomotive vendors as well as other Class 1 railroads to identify the best locomotive models and components to meet CN's requirements--- Support the Supply Management organization in their dealings with locomotive vendors--- Influence the product roadmap of CN's vendors to ensure that CN and its customers' future needs are considered when planning future productsLeveraging Data to Improve Asset Utilization--- Leverage data analysis to better understand how CN's locomotive fleet is used and maintained and use the insight gained to highlight areas of opportunity--- Support other Mechanical leaders with regards to maintenance, inspection work scopes, reliability calculations, estimates and root-cause analysisWorking ConditionsThe role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environments in various weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires minimal travel (up to 15%) within North America. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, deal with pressure and stress.RequirementsExperienceSpecialty--- Minimum 7 years of industry experience with a deep understanding of CN's network as well as CN's Transportation and Mechanical departmentsEducation/Certification/Designation--- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or similar field or equivalent experienceCompetencies--- Demonstrates agility and drives change--- Collaborates with others and shares information--- Sets direction and inspires others--- Communicates with impact--- Identifies needs and finds solutions to create value for all stakeholders--- Knows the business and stays current on industry needsTechnical Skills/Knowledge--- In-depth knowledge of North American Class 1 train and locomotive operations--- In-depth knowledge of CN's locomotive fleet, rail network and systems--- Experience with data analysis tools such as Tableau, Power BI, BusinessObjects, Systems, Applications and Products (SAP) and Business Warehouse (BW)--- Experience with CN office applications (e.g., SAP, Service Reliability Systems (SRS), Real Time Business Intelligence (RTBI))About CNCN is a world-class transportation leader and trade-enabler.
