Job Description:The Vice President of Strategy is responsible for assisting the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) with developing, communicating, executing, and sustaining JourneyCare's strategic priorities. This position is responsible for facilitating JourneyCare's leadership team and Board of Directors in developing a portfolio of strategic initiatives to achieve JourneyCare's long-term goals. This individual also works collaboratively with agency leadership to translate the strategic priorities into actionable and measurable plans and oversees plan execution.The VP of Strategy provides strategic direction and oversight to the contracting function, working to secure optimal reimbursement and protect JourneyCare's interests in contract negotiations and oversees contract management activities.The VP of Strategy position will be located out of our Glenview, Illinois office.Strategy Management


  • Work collaboratively with the senior executive team, executive leadership team, strategic planning committee and Board to develop JourneyCare's business strategy and strategic priorities
  • Develop and maintain a framework and process for strategic decision making
  • Identify and evaluate new strategic opportunities
  • Work with external advisors in the evaluation and execution of strategic opportunities
  • Oversee periodic review and refresh of strategic priorities and their translation into actionable and quantitative plans
  • Monitor execution of the strategic plan
  • Ensure department/functional strategic plan projects align to JourneyCare's strategic priorities
  • Facilitate strategy meetings with the Senior Executive Leadership Team, Executive Leadership Team and the Board strategic planning committee
  • In collaboration with leadership mobilize and manage teams of individuals charged with executing strategic initiatives
  • Act as a resource and coach across an organization to increase understanding of and alignment to JourneyCare's strategic direction and plan
  • Collaborate with Vice President of Marketing and Communications to communicate JourneyCare's strategy internally and externally to employees, donors, partners, suppliers, and contractors as appropriate

    Contracting and Network Development


    • In collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) develop and maintain a comprehensive set of business contracting rules that identifies contracting parameters including preferred terms, acceptable terms, required terms and unacceptable terms
    • Develop policies and standard operating procedures related to contracting and provider relations activities
    • Identify contracting opportunities by strategically approaching the payer and provider communities after prioritizing the agency's needs both quantifiable and qualitatively
    • Analyze contracts in relationship to business contracting rules and financial and operational impact
    • Negotiate provider agreements as required to successfully meet the needs of patients and families and the agency
    • Direct the contracting process from investigation through execution, ensuring consistent and timely issue resolution, follow up and follow through
    • Negotiate and complete contract modification and extensions as needed
    • Direct implementation of new contracts with relevant staff

      Contract Management


      • Oversee maintenance of the contract database to facilitate billing, claims payment, provider selection for service provision, ongoing communication with partners, compliance monitoring and reporting
      • Ensure the agency has standard clauses and template contracts, service agreements and memoranda of understanding for appropriate service categories (commercial insurance, hospital, nursing home etc.)
      • Ensure all contracts are in compliance with Medicare and Medicaid requirements and all applicable local, state and federal regulations

        Leadership and Supervision


        • Build highly effective teams that demonstrate consistently exceptional performance and are key resources to the agency
        • Set goals, objectives, staffing and work standards and monitor performance against standards
        • Act as a resource and support to staff, removing barriers to effective performance
        • Ensure annual review of all department staff positions
        • Ensure staff members are cross-trained and procedures are documented
        • Evaluate performance of departments and staff on an ongoing basis through written and verbal feedback, recognizing positive performance and counseling/conducting corrective actions for performance that does not meet expectations
        • Ensure that job responsibilities of direct reports are defined and understood

          Continuous Improvement


          • Support organizational efforts focused on continuous improvement
          • Participate in Quality Committee activities as needed
          • Identify issues as they related to process improvement and customer satisfaction
          • Maintain ongoing involvement and follow through with system improvements
          • Ensures that the contracting process, policies and workflows are optimally designed to maximize efficiencies and to reflect industry best practices

            Other


            • Maintain current knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies and directives, and contracting and provider relations standards and best practices

              Required Experience:


              • Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business or related field required. Master's Degree preferred
              • Valid Driver's License required
              • Valid Auto Insurance required

                10 years demonstrated experience in business strategy development and execution.
              • Experience in healthcare environment required and hospice environment a plus
              • Experience with laws, regulations and compliance affecting the healthcare industry
              • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in health care accrediting and regulatory agencies (including CMS/Medicare and DHFS/Medicaid), health care delivery models, health care policies, financial reimbursement models and insurer/HMO/PPO operations
              • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in managed care contract terms, , health benefit design, provider relations and contracting relationships unique to insurance, managed care and health care industries
              • Business acumen and budgeting/ financial management experience
              • Computer skills (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, e-mail, internet), voicemail
              • Computerized contract management and database systems
