Medical Instrument Technician (EEG-EMU) - Chicago, Illinois
The technician operates and monitors neurodiagnostic equipment in
the Neurology Department at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center (VISN
12). The Medical Technician (EEG-EMU) will work directly with the
Neurology Service Chief, Staff Physicians, the MIT Supervisor,
residents and fellows to assist in the operation of the epilepsy
monitoring unit following JCAHO standards.
Independently performs routine and non-standard procedures
including EEG and EP, including awake, asleep, portable, ECI, L
Consistently pe1forms high quality studies for complex and
non-routine procedures in difficult and demanding environments such
as intensive care units or operating room.
Acts as lead EMU technician by instructing and guiding other
technicians, residents and fellows on performing EEG in the EMU
Knowledge of medications and their effects on EEG recordings.
Recognizes life threatening, medically emergent, or complex patient
Identifies serious conditions requiring rapid intervention when
Provides patients and their families with a thorough explanation of
the procedure being performed.
Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
Follows established laboratory and/or hospital guidelines m
completing "administrative duties" for each test performed.
With the other technicians in the laboratory, is responsible for
inventory of laboratory supplies
Independently operates a variety of neurodiagnostic equipment to
administer routine and specialized diagnostic treatment during
Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make
recommendations concerning developments which would improve
Understands more advanced medical terminology, neuroanatomy,
neurophysiology, and neuroradiology and how it relates to the
neurodiagnostic testing being performed.
Ability to interpret testing data to provide information for
medical or surgical staff during testing procedures.
Follows established laboratory protocols in performing standard and
specialized EEG recordings
Ensures the adequacy of the EEG recording during seizures
Uses equipment specific processing software to execute several
automation functions such as storing, retrieving, and transferring,
electronic documents and files.
Ability to interface and adapt neurodiagnostic testing equipment,
settings and procedures to unusual, complex and often critical
Recognizes life threatening or medically emergent patient
situations and will take proper action to provide emergent
Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely
integrated treatment and examination program.
Special Assignments: 25-50%
Responsible for day-to-day operations for the EMU.
Understands the clinical processes and operational environment of
the Neurophysiology labs and EMU.
Advocates for the effective use of technology to improve patient
care through high quality, cost effective solutions.
If required by the service, knowledge of and ability to provide the
full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility
for assignment of work to be performed; performance evaluation;
selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements,
and, when appropriate, disciplinary actions.
The EMU technician is under the general supervision of the EMU
