Description
Join UChicago Medicine, as a Special Procedures Nurse (SPN) -
In-House Registry. In this role, you will support the Infusion
Therapy team at our main Hyde Park campus.
Under the direction of an Attending Physician or a licensed
independent practitioner, RN provides technically complex and high
risk nursing care services to patients which may include one or
more of the following categories: sedation, intravenous infusions,
complex procedures, e.g., lumbar puncture, cardiac catherization;
This may also include specialized monitoring during procedure and
recovery phase; The RN may have Charge Nurse responsibility for
his/her assigned unit.
Responsibilities include:
* Represents The University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC) in a
positive manner with the prospective, former and current community
we serve; interacts effectively with a diverse group of faculty,
staff, and other customers of our services; demonstrates knowledge
of the operating practices of UCMC.

* Handles confidential information consistent with Federal HIPAA
legislation.
* Performs a variety of clinical and research procedures with
efficiency and high standards of quality; assures that the proper
protocol is used for each sedation.
* Provides patient care in a compassionate and empathetic manner;
demonstrates knowledge of age-specific considerations in the
provision of care. Involves a multidisciplinary team as needed to
support patient and family psychological, social and spiritual
needs.
* Accurately completes required patient assessment, documentation,
and interpretations for each patient encounter. Possesses sound
professional judgment for timely physician intervention as needed.
Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate actions,
initiates appropriate life supporting interventions while
communicating appropriately with physicians.
* Maintains nursing equipment and work areas in proper working
condition; reports malfunctioning equipment or housekeeping issues
to the appropriate person. Maintains a neat and clean work area
with equipment. Maintains adequate inventory control of all
necessary supplies. Emergency equipment maintained with adequate
availability, good working order and restocks as needed with a
fiscal awareness and accountability.
* Interfaces with customers, specifically patients, families,
visitors, and UCMC staff in a professional, positive and
accommodating manner; demonstrates knowledge of AIDET principles
and employs in all situations; demonstrates flexibility in
accommodating special needs of customers whenever possible.
* Performs all required Quality Assurance testing as indicated or
as required by UCMC
* Rotates to clinical areas as directed to assist in safe staffing
ratios; utilizes resources to safely transport sedated patients to
an appropriate or designated area within the UCMC
* The RN is expert in assessing and treating and evaluating patient
conditions specific to their work area, e.g., anxiety, pain,
claustrophobia and underlying disease conditions. Due to the
complex nature of pain, RN will evaluate and treat pain in a
prompt, caring fashion and reassess after each intervention,
charting per UCMC protocol.
* RN maintains hospital required nursing & ICU unit specific
competencies needed to provide proficient nursing care; RN will
provide continuity of care for infant, pediatric or adult patients
based on area of specialty. This includes assisting in the care of
critically ill patients during sedation/procedural encounters.
Administering high-risk infusion and transfusion (i.e. chemotherapy
medicines).
* Contributes to the Patient Services Sector/Outpatient Services
Sector offering constructive suggestions for change and
participating in the planning, implementation and evaluation of new
and existing programs utilizing evidence based practice.
* RN uses nursing knowledge to anticipate and plan for patient care
needs. The RN understands and applies safety principles and serves
as a resource to other healthcare personnel on patient care. RN
knows the potential risks and complications from specialty
procedures and can assist in the initial treatment of adverse
effects in their area of expertise.
Job Qualifications
* Associate Degree in Nursing; BSN degree or higher preferred.
* Associate Degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program
within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire, and make progress toward
and complete their BSN degree within 30 months. ADN nurses receive
100% tuition reimbursement towards a BSN degree from an accredited
program.
* Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the
State of Illinois
* Current CPR, ACLS, and/or PALS Certifications
Preferred Qualifications
* ONS Chemotherapy Immunotherapy card within 30 days of hire
* Chemotherapy experience preferred
* Experience working in a research environment

Must comply with UCMC's COVID-19 Vaccination requirement as a
condition of employment. If you have already received the

will be considered consistent with applicable law. Lastly, a

also required for all employees prior to hire.
