Job Description:
Mount Sinai Hospital has a companion unit where women and their
newborns spend the first few days recovering from the birth and
learning how to care for themselves and their newborn infants. With
31 postpartum rooms, we are able to provide a quiet environment for
our mother baby couplets and their significant other for a 24 hour
rooming-in experience. Our nurses are highly skilled in the medical
and nursing care that is required for our patients as well as being
able to provide highly interactive education for our families. Our
lactation consultants are available to provide high-level
breastfeeding support as they help lead the way in our
Baby-Friendly Hospital designation journey. We also provide
high-risk medical management and nursing support for pregnant women
in our unit and the competent care needed for our antepartum
patients who may have problem pregnancies of any gestational age.
Along with our social workers and chaplain, we are able to provide
a variety of services that support the complex needs of our
families. Our newborn nursery is only a way-station for most of our
newborns who pass through quickly after birth. But for babies who
need continuing medical care, our nurses are skilled in caring for
these babies and providing support for their families. A team of
obstetricians, pediatricians and neonatologists are available 24/7
to work closely with our caregivers and our families. We have such
a close bond with our families and we often enjoy visits from them
as their children grow and as their mothers return in later years
to have more babies with us. We are proud of our two Daisy nurse
award recipients we have had in the past year. If you enjoy the
dynamics of education and teaching for our mothers, their families
and the care of our newborns in an urban setting with many physical
and social challenges, you will enjoy working in this close-knit,
family-centered unit of caregivers. We provide annual training and
review of NRP and electronic fetal monitoring to enhance the skills
of our postpartum caregivers. Our own nurse educator provides
support and educational training to our caregivers throughout the
year. If you love working with families and having the support of a
great team of caregivers in a warm, caring environment, our Mother
Baby Unit may be the place for you! We strongly prefer bilingual
(Spanish-speaking) caregivers who have a baccalaureate degree in
