Location: Chicago, IL - Full Time - Hours: 7 am - 3:30 pm -
Required Travel: None A Brief Overview: The Registered Nurse
Surgical Operations Specialist plays a vital role in optimizing the
efficiency and quality of surgical operations. This position works
collaboratively with surgical teams, nurses, and other healthcare
professionals to ensure seamless patient care and adherence to best
practices in surgical services. The Surgical Operations Specialist
provides clinical and operational leadership for an assigned
surgical specialty (e.g., Orthopedics, Vascular, Neurosurgery)
within the Operating Room. The role serves as the specialty expert,
ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality care delivery. This
individual coordinates resources, standardizes practice, oversees
equipment and supplies, mentors staff, and collaborates with
surgeons and interdisciplinary partners to optimize specialty
performance and patient outcomes. The Registered Nurse Surgical
Operations Specialist is responsible for providing expert clinical
support within their assigned specialty area and maintaining 24/7
accountability for that specialty as determined by departmental
needs. This role may include on-call responsibilities and
participation in emergency cases, requiring the ability to both
scrub and circulate as the specialty expert. The Registered Nurse
Surgical Operations Specialist must be highly knowledgeable in all
specialty-specific equipment and instrument trays, including the
individual components within each set, to effectively teach others
and anticipate procedural needs throughout the surgical case. This
depth of expertise ensures optimal preparation, team support, and
case efficiency across the service line. What you will do: -
Directs daily clinical operations within the assigned specialty,
ensuring efficient workflows, appropriate room utilization, and
adherence to surgical services best practices. - Coordinates and
facilitates the scheduling of surgical cases to optimize operating
room utilization and ensure the availability of required staff,
equipment, and resources. - Collaborates with surgeons,
anesthesiologists, and nursing staff to ensure complete case
preparation, accuracy of instrumentation, and readiness for all
scheduled procedures. - Conducts preoperative assessments,
reviewing patient medical histories, verifying surgical readiness,
and communicating key findings with the surgical team and
leadership. - Communicates with patients and families to provide
education, address concerns, and ensure understanding of the
surgical process while serving as a patient advocate. - Oversees
the availability, readiness, and functionality of surgical
instruments, implants, and equipment to support safe and efficient
case progression. - Collaborates with Supply Chain to ensure timely
restocking, equipment maintenance, and cost-efficient utilization
of specialty-specific resources. - Ensures compliance with
regulatory and accreditation standards (AORN, Joint Commission,
CMS) and promotes adherence to infection prevention and surgical
safety protocols. - Leads or participates in specialty-focused
quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives,
including monitoring surgical outcomes and infection control
indicators. - Maintains accurate and complete documentation in the
electronic health record (EHR) for all surgical procedures,
interventions, and patient care activities. - Prepares and submits
required operational, quality, and compliance reports in alignment
with hospital policy and regulatory requirements. - Mentors staff
and students through education, coaching, and competency validation
to ensure consistent practice and progressive growth within the
specialty. - Acts as a liaison between the specialty surgical team
and surgical services leadership, fostering collaboration and
communication across disciplines. What you will need: - Bachelors
Degree Nursing Preferred - Registered Nurse (RN) - Illinois
Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR)
Required - Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association
Required - 2 Years in surgical nursing, with experience in surgical
coordination or perioperative nursing required. - Advanced
knowledge of surgical nursing principles, specialty
instrumentation, and perioperative workflows. - Strong
communication, organization, and collaboration skills to
effectively interface with multidisciplinary surgical teams. -
Demonstrated ability to lead, educate, and mentor staff within a
