Job Description Certification Details - BLS - Illinois RN License Job Details - The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care including executing Licensed Independent Provider’s orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting Licensed Independent Provider in examinations and treatment of patients. - Applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment and referrals of inmates/residents. - Performs all technical/clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure. - Attends sick call with the physician to see inmates/residents; prepares a list of inmates/residents to be examined; prepares examining room and equipment. - Operates pill call, dispenses medication and documents as required by applicable policies and/or procedures. - Calls Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders, and/or other emergencies. - Examines and assesses new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries or inmates/residents who become ill or injured; refers inmates/residents to emergency room or other appropriate healthcare facility as required by their condition. - Performs emergency procedures as needed and notifies Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders. - Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel and ensures their needs are addressed. - Monitors inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate. - Provides guidance, supervises and monitors nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff. - Maintains good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers and outside provider agencies. - Utilizes established corporate, facility and correctional policies and procedures in making decisions, using sound independent judgment. - Regularly evaluates provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of services. - Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records. - Assists Health Service Administrator with review of medical files to ensure all provided services are documented. - Closely monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses. - Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed or required. - Complies with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances. - Observes and records inmate/resident behavior. - Inspects medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by inmate/residents; securely stores or safely disposes of supplies and equipment. - Provides health counseling and health education on individual or group basis as required. - Assists Health Service Administrator to prepare and maintain a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary and/or operational records, reports and logs. - Reads, analyzes, comprehends and interprets medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, legal and non-legal documents. - Reviews, processes and responds (via corporate counsel) to lawsuits; attends court hearings when necessary. - Facilitates NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO accreditation of the medical program by providing required level of efficiency and approved, appropriate medical services. - Prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures; takes appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies. Job Requirements - Must possess current licensure in the state of employment (Illinois). - A valid driver's license. Schedule Information - Contract length is 13 weeks. Additional Details - Preferred: One (1) year of professional nursing experience. - Graduate from an accredited college, university or nursing program with a degree/diploma in nursing.
