Join us!Job SummaryThe Expert, Locomotive Onboard Technology is responsible to provide expert support in designing, implementing, and maintaining cutting-edge onboard systems, including Electronic Train Control (ETC), Positive Train Control (PTC), and Remote-Control Locomotive (RCL). In addition to defining installation, maintenance and troubleshooting procedures, the role focuses on planned times to complete the task. Moreover, the incumbent plays a vital role in the execution of day-to-day project management for installation, support, design, and planned upgrade activities.Main ResponsibilitiesProject Management--- Participate in daily operation conference calls--- Stage software on locomotives for planned updates to reduce dwell time--- Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Project Manager (PM) for planned Onboard modifications --- Assist in leading project planning, execution, and monitoring for onboard system upgrades or installations--- Coordinate with internal stakeholders, external vendors, and regulatory agencies to ensure project success--- Assists in handling project budgets, timelines, and resources effectively to achieve objectives within scopeOnboard Design and Development--- Lead the design and development of locomotive onboard systems, including ETC, PTC, and RCL--- Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate new technologies and improve existing onboard systems--- Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements--- Lead onsite field-testing and production role outSafety and Compliance--- Ensure onboard systems comply with safety regulations and industry standards, such as Federal Railroad Association (FRA) requirements for PTC and Transport Canada (TC) requirements for Locomotive Video and Voice Recordings (LVVRs)--- Conduct safety audits and inspections to identify and address potential hazards or compliance issues--- Develop and maintain documentation, including safety proceduresExpert Support and Fleet Management--- Provide expert technical support to troubleshoot onboard system issues and resolve complex challenges--- Offer guidance and training to Quality Field Technicians and maintenance crews--- Oversee the management of locomotive fleet operations, including scheduling, maintenance, and repairs--- Assist in developing and implement preventive maintenance programs to maximize asset reliability and lifespan--- Monitor fleet performance metrics and analyze data to identify areas for improvementReliability Assurance--- Implement reliability-centred maintenance strategies to minimize downtime and optimize asset performance--- Conduct risk assessments and develop contingency plans to mitigate potential failures or disruptions--- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement reliability improvements and drive continuous optimization--- Revise target task times for PTC Mechanical installation, maintenance and troubleshooting procedures--- Collaborate with other Mechanical personnel on work scopes covering both PTC and non-PTC activities as well as review actuals versus targetsWorking ConditionsThe role is performed in a combination of office and outdoor environment in various types of weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress. The role requires occasional travel (up to 25%) within Canada and the United States (U.S.).RequirementsExperiencePositive Train Control Installation or Maintenance--- Minimum 1 year of PTC installation or maintenance experience*--- Minimum 5 years of locomotive electrical or mechanical experienceo Experience leading a teamo Experience with locomotive electrical systems or industrial automation *Any experience for these above would be considered as an assetEducation/Certification/Designation--- High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)--- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering or an Electronics Technician diploma**Any designation for these above would be considered as an assetCompetencies--- Knows the business and stays current on industry needs--- Applied critical thinking--- Collaborates with others and shares information--- Leads by example for the safety and security of all--- Identifies needs and finds solutions to create value for all stakeholdersTechnical Skills/Knowledge--- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Windows, Linux, and UNIX operating systems--- Knowledge of various locomotive systems operation (i.e., Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) Electro Modal Division (EMD) and GE Control Systems, both 26L, and Electronic Airbrake (EAB) type airbrake systems, Locotrol, Trip Optimizer)--- Knowledge of Locomotive onboard system (i.e. Auxiliary card cage (ACC), HPEAP, Locomotive interface gateway (Lig), LVVR)--- Knowledge of Wabtec I-ETMS --- Knowledge of networks, radio and cellular communications--- Basic programming skills using Python, Structured Query Language (SQL), Java, PHP, C++, and HTMLAbout CNCN is a world-class transportation leader and trade-enabler.
