ABOUT THE ROLE Chicago is a global city leading the future of the built environment, and our office there is the largest in the firm. The Senior Design Leader we are seeking will have the skills, experience and reputation that reflects the importance of this context. You will be responsible for the successful implementation of our goal to be one of the most innovative, creative and highly regarded design firms in the world; will help nurture and develop the people and culture of the office; and be a leading voice firmwide for design excellence. WHAT YOU WILL DO Design Performance / Environment: Owns and is accountable for the design quality of our work. Together with co-leaders, teams and our clients, create innovative, sustainable and well-substantiated design solutions through our pillars of intelligence, intuition, inclusion, translation and continuity.

  • Design Excellence: A significant contributor to the firm's goal of striving for design excellence in its work and building the firm's portfolio. Expectations include:
  • Interpret and distill client goals and aspirations into creative conceptual design solutions that are relevant, responsible, and memorable. Evolve design solutions iteratively to reflect the evolutionary nature of client and team goals. Guide the execution of design concepts throughout all phases, with particular emphasis on early phase development.
  • Engage in activities that strengthen, differentiate and promote our brand locally, regionally and nationally. Publishing our projects in design and market-specific media outlets, as well as other potential opportunities for publication such as articles on research and innovation is expected. You will be expected to regularly submit and successfully win design awards. Presentation at and contribution to conferences is encouraged for our top design leaders. Culture, Growth and Mentorship: Partner with office leaders and the Executive Director - Design Strategies to create a "culture of design, innovation and research" in the office and firm. Owns and is responsible for:
    • Mentoring and growing emerging professionals toward future creative leadership. Assistance in nurturing an environment that exemplifies collaboration, experimentation, innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship.
    • Creating a stimulating and rewarding environment that sets the tone for design excellence in the office and demonstrates it across the firm.
    • Empowering staff and delegating effectively; building high-performance teams by encouraging innovation and continuous improvement. Provoking critical thinking and critique of our work.
    • Working within our culture of being an integrated practice by collaborating with technical leaders across disciplines, subject matter experts and others in employing sensitive consideration of our Living-Centered Design ethos.
    • Integrates performance-based and sustainable design strategies into design solutions. Client and Business Development: Has a close working relationship with the market - client leaders in the office and firm responsible for developing and maintaining client relationships; builds client trust and loyalty; and contributes to bringing in work. Identify, pursue and secure new client opportunities for CannonDesign in collaboration with business development and market leaders. Business Plan Leadership: Responsible for the ideation and implementation of key strategies in our business plans, focused on creative process, imagination, improving our work, investing all our staff in design and innovation, and disseminating ideas both internally and externally that achieve firm distinction. ABOUT YOUR QUALIFICATIONS
      • Bachelor's degree in Architecture. Master's degree in Architecture preferred.
      • Licensed Architect required.
      • 15 years minimum experience in a design leadership role.
      • Additional certifications and/or training relevant to this role is preferred.
      • Strong communication and leadership skills.
      • Business acumen and proven ability to execute strategy.
      • Professional acumen and maturity demonstrated by the ability to communicate authentically and respectfully. ABOUT WORKING HERE
