General Summary
Under the direction of Clinical Chair of the Brain Innovation
Center, the Section Chief, Stroke Rehabilitation (Section Chief)
leads the medical practice of attending physicians, as well as the
clinical contingent of the interdisciplinary team within the
Section of Stroke. This individual also functions as a Shirley Ryan
AbilityLab (SRAlab) attending physician on the medical staff.
The Section Chief is accountable for meeting established Section
standards for quality of care, patient care practice and leading or
co-leading research initiatives. The Section Chief also shares
responsibility with a designated operations leader for planning,
developing, implementing and evaluating Section success, using
metrics and key performance indicators (e.g., safety, outcome,
operating, regulatory and financial).
Section Chief consistently demonstrates alignment with the SRAlab
Mission and Vision and is responsible for professionally
representing SRAlab work in Stroke rehabilitation and recovery,
nationally and internationally, and for recruiting and retaining
experts to join him/her in the Section to achieve better outcomes
for patients who present with impairments from Stroke.
Key Responsibilities in Conjunction with Clinical Chair
- Establishes practice standards, and with others, oversees
quality of interdisciplinary clinical care, including appropriate
development and implementation of clinical protocols, performance
standards and policies across the system of care.
- Ensures evidenced-based scientific approach to patient care
delivery; embraces and pursues scientific process, and is actively
involved in Stroke related clinical research with success in
publishing scientific articles, review articles and/or book
chapters.
- Demonstrates the ability to lead or serve as co-investigator
for research within the Section of Stroke Rehabilitation;
demonstrates success in collaborating with other colleagues,
obtaining intra- and extra-mural funding for institutional research
projects or multi-center trials.
- Oversees/is responsible for clinical quality, appropriateness
and effectiveness of therapeutic plan involving all team members,
patient safety, outcomes and patient satisfaction; ensures an
effective, safe care environment.
- Implements strategy and service development consistent with
patient, referrer, managed-care/payor expectations.
- Serves as practicing attending physician in compliance with
by-laws, policies and procedures for overseeing patient
care.
- Actively participates in assigned medical staff committees,
chairing when appropriate.
- Participates in medical education activities for residents and
fellows, including teaching medical students and residents, Grand
Rounds, continuing education and in-service training.
- Provides consultation with the Academy in the development of
stroke-related education for external customers including the
annual Stroke Rehabilitation Course.
- Participates in Stroke program planning and marketing
activities; develops and maintains contact with referral sources,
managed-care organizations and other key contacts.
- Shares responsibility with designated operations leader for
planning, developing, implementing and evaluating Section success,
using metrics and key performance indicators (e.g., safety,
outcome, operating, regulatory and financial).
- Maintains strong relationships with academic institutions and
professional organizations; fosters an energetic teaching/learning
environment within Section of Stroke Rehabilitation.
- Collaborates with leaders and staff in other SRAlab programs
toward the achievement of overall institutional goals
Reporting Relationships
- Reports to the Clinical Chair, Brain Innovation Center
- Supervises attending physicians within Section of Stroke
Personal and Interpersonal Characteristics
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, including proven ability to
communicate effectively with patients, families, referring parties,
staff, managed-care organizations and payors, scientists and other
internal and external stakeholders.
- Fully embraces scientific basis of medical practice; facile
with scientific concepts and research method.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
- Licensed to practice medicine in the State of
Illinois.
- Successful completion of a residency program with Board
Certification in physical medicine and rehabilitation or other
appropriate specialty.
- Has qualifications to achieve Associate Professor or higher at
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, required
unless otherwise agreed to by Chief Medical Officer.
- Skilled in medical education including didactics and bedside
teaching.
- At least five years' experience in program leadership role with
significant focus on care of patients with stroke and related
diagnoses.
- Quantitative skills necessary to initiate and review clinical
and business analyses.
- Experience with and knowledge of fundraising; demonstrated
experience in donor cultivation activities.
Working Conditions
- Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or
extreme temperature.
