Job Description:
Job Summary:The Research Specialist will assist other lab
personnel in ongoing research projects. In addition, this
individual will be responsible for maintenance of the laboratory,
which includes ordering and re-stocking supplies. Finally, the
Research Specialist will be expected to take on an independent
research project that complements the laboratories' overall
research goals. We are seeking a highly motivated individual for a
visiting research specialist position within the Laboratory of
Andrius Kazlauskas, PhD in the Departments of Ophthalmology and
Visual Sciences/Physiology and Biophysics at the University of
Illinois at Chicago. The focus of the Kazlauskas lab is diabetic

graduates with post-baccalaureate scientific training and/or wet
lab work experience are encouraged to apply. This an ideal position
for those individuals that have completed their undergraduate
degree and would like to obtain additional research experience
prior to entering medical or graduate school. Primary
ResponsibilitiesConduct molecular and cellular experiments that
test hypotheses regarding the pathogenesis of diabetic
retinopathyCollaborate with the Principal Investigator (PI) and
other researchers to design and process samples from mouse models
of diabetic retinopathyTest, optimize and implement both new and
existing methods, procedures and techniquesDevelop and optimize
comprehensive laboratory protocols while maintaining accurate
records of the work performedSupervise and train other lab members
in specialized tasksAssist the PI in generating data and figures
for grant applications and manuscriptsAid in the preparation and
implementation of general laboratory maintenance protocols (e.g.
safety, training, waste management, animal); assist with ordering
lab supplies and maintaining laboratory stock and
inventoriesPerform other related duties and participate in special
projects as assigned.Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree in
science or related field required. Master's degree in science
preferred.A minimum of 3 years related research
experience.Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of
research principles, concepts, practices and methods.Proficient in
specific lab research techniques.Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in biology, biomedicine or a related field
preferredExcellent organizational, verbal and written
communication, multi-tasking and reporting skills preferred.
Experience in one or more of the following fields is considered
favorable: molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, mouse
genetics, mouse husbandry. While prior research experience in a wet
lab is desired, it is not a prerequisite.To apply, please visit:
