POSITION TITLE:Community Outreach Specialist Status: Exempt GRADE:1

DEPT/PROGRAM NAME: Strategic Initiatives/FamilyWorks SALARY: $40K/yr

REPORTS TO: FamilyWorks Associate Director SUPERVISES:N/A

SUMMARY:As key member of multi-disciplined FamilyWorks team, The Community Outreach Specialist is responsible forraising Chicago Housing Authority residents' awareness and utilization of FamilyWorks and YWCA programs and services; develop & maintain networking opportunities of community resources and stakeholders.

COLLABORATES WITH: Collaborations and work relationships exist with: YWCA leadership and staff; CHA FamilyWorks staff; Volunteers/Interns; CHA Leasing Office staff and other partners.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Community Outreach & Program Operations (90%): Working as part of a team to design and deliver a range of innovative community outreach and engagement activities to support CHA residents enrollment in the FamilyWorks Program; Interprets program services to CHA residents to support awareness and motivation to enroll; Leverage and distributes informational materials such as flyers, posters, social media and other media to residents to describe what, where, and when program services are available to them; Develop and sustain positive relationships with a range of community stakeholders, including residents, community leaders, and community organizations to facilitate attendance at FamilyWorks orientations, events and other gatherings; Serves as liaison between clients, and potential clients and assists with completing forms and obtaining other documents to receive services; Assists in scheduling appointments for clients to meet with program professionals; May coordinate transportation and/or childcare services to assist clients in availing themselves of program services; Assist in the identification and coordination of visibility events, i.e. community fairs, information tables, etc. with community groups, employers and other agencies to promote awareness of FamilyWorks and agency services. Recruiting and supporting community residents to become volunteers in their community, and ensuring that they remain engaged and involved.

Establish and maintain friendly, compassionate, professional working relationships with individuals receiving services, family members, and support team in a manner that reflects the agency's values, core principles and culture. Collaborate with FamilyWorks Team to create an engaging environment that keeps families engaged and wanting to be involved, ensuring all interactions lead to valued experiences and family outcomes.

Assist with orientations and enrollment of eligible resident; Assist with gathering administering assessments and intake process, as appropriate, to support development of Family Service Plans; Provide crisis intervention and support to individuals and families experiencing crisis that impairs their capacity to function and make informed decisions.

Data Management & Reporting (5%): Prepares monthly reports for supervisor on services provided as required;Responsible for entering program information into the program database according to schedule; Assist in the maintenance of confidential client files; Participates in gathering community data to assess program effectiveness, increased or additional service needs, community resources, etc.

Professional Development (5%): Complete six hours per year of continuing education in providing family-centered and trauma-informed services. Complete other continuing education and training as set by YWCA or other agencies/funders.

Growth and Innovation (5%): The Community Outreach Specialist actively contributes to the continuous improvement of FamilyWorks services, systems and resources with a particular focus on family centered practice; Understand and interpret YWCA business strategy, service model and organizational priorities and design to implement innovative solutions that align with clients and other end users expectations and experiences.

NON-ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist with general office functions, including distribution of materials/reports; mail preparation and distribution; assembling/distributing informational packets. Participate in meeting coordination. Support community fairs, events and gatherings. May work with volunteers.

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED: Other duties outside of the responsibilities of the position may be assigned, whether for a project, special needs task or other assignments.

QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or equivalent with 1 year of customer service or community outreach experience required. Well-developed interpersonal skills and group dynamic skills are required due to the nature of the position's collaborations and outreach. Effective oral and written skills combined with good collaborative skills are necessary to work with both the FamilyWorks team and clients. The position requires the ability to follow and comprehend program instructions and materials. Basic level skills in MS Office and Outlook are required. Good knowledge of community resources and of local community and population; familiarity with health and social problems and attitudes in the community; Ability to speak before small and larger groups effectively; emotional maturity; good judgment; tact; integrity; tolerance of differing points of view, beliefs and lifestyles; Proven creative abilities, strong organizational and time management skills are required. The position requires the ability to work outdoors for long periods of time in all weather conditions, travel within the City and suburban areas. May be required to attend events or meetings outside of normal work hours.

Effective problem-solving abilities required. Personal characteristics include inter-personal skills based on excellent listening skills, and the ability to collaborate and to build relationships. The role requires respect for diversity.

CERTIFICATION(s) REQUIRED: None required upon entry to the position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The incumbent works outdoors for long periods of time and may perform some duties within the clients home. While performing the duties of this job, the Community Outreach Specialist is regularly required to stand and walk for long periods of time, operate a computer, complete paperwork, and move about the community. It may be necessary to attend meetings/trainings off the work premises. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The Community Outreach Specialist works independently and in a group setting with other FamilyWorks and other YWCA staff in a shared office. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, sit, reach with hands and arms, see, talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. The position requires some evenings and weekends. Reasonable accommodations may be made for an employee to meet the essential responsibilities of the position.

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm. This position will occasionally require work on some evenings and weekends to align with out-of-school time hours and availability of youth (e.g. Monday - Friday, 10:00am - 6:00pm or 11:00am - 7:00pm or 33.5 hours during the week and 4 hours each Saturday). Schedule can vary depending on the needs of the agency.
